I did one of these “top posts” roundups last year and it was really fun for me to see what was the most popular with all of you on the interwebs. As 2015 drew to a close, I was highly anticipating this moment so I could see what truly came out on top. I’m a numbers and charts kind of person, so I love looking at stats and data and all that stuff. Some highlights in my mind were the super fun Feast of St. Pizza post (where myself and a bunch of friends visited 10 pizza places in one day in my hometown of Lebanon, PA), talking about my wedding (and sharing my wedding cake recipe), plus my honeymoon (parts one and two, which included a recipe for the amazing kouign amann pastry from France), and let’s not forget about the #virtualpumpkinparty (more on that below). My small college didn’t have a very exciting meal plan (sorry, Moore), but they did make a roasted butternut squash soup that changed my life. I’ve never been a huge fan of pumpkin pie (unless it has butter pecans and chocolate toffee bits added to it), so this butternut squash soup was my first encounter with winter squash that made me fall in love with the vegetable. This led to an unhealthy obsession with the triple squash soup at Whole Foods. Happy Pi Day!!!! Did you know this is one of the most epic Pi Days ever? The number pi is 3.14159265359 … blah blah blah and today is 3.14.15, aka the first 5 digits of pi. I’m a math nerd, so this is kind of a big deal. When I was in high school my AP Calc class (which consisted of me and about ten of my best friends) would force our ever-gracious teacher, Mr. Miller, to let us celebrate Pi Day, which meant we brought in tons of pie and did nothing but eat pie all class period. I’ve mentioned on here before that I’m getting into a whiskey/bourbon craze. I’ve noticed a lot of people around me getting into that scene lately as well, so maybe we’re all just conforming to a bigger trend? I actually heard an interesting story on NPR recently about how women are the future of whiskey. Historically considered a “man’s drink,” whiskey is becoming more and more popular with the female crowd, and whiskey producers are paying attention. Personally, I think I can attribute much of my coming around to whiskey to the artisanal cocktail scene. (I prefer to get used to a new spirit as it mingles with other tasty items in a fancy beverage.) To celebrate my newfound love, I’ve rounded up the whiskey and bourbon-focused recipes I’ve been eyeing on the internet. This wish list of mine is so true to life – I clearly love the sweets and cocktails more than real food. Sometimes you land on a recipe that becomes an instant classic in your home – a real staple in your weeknight arsenal, if you will. These recipes must fit a lot of criteria: they need to be delicious (obviously), require little prep work, use things you probably have hanging out in your fridge or pantry (or at least be easy enough to pick up on your way home from work), not make an enormous mess in the kitchen, work well as leftovers, and preferably be ready to eat within an hour or less. It’s no surprise that not many recipes fulfill all these needs. I’ve only discovered a few so far, like the Roasted Sausage with Broccoli and Fennel from Food52, Pesto and Pea Tortellini Soup from Bev Cooks, Honey Mustard Chicken from Foodiecrush, and the recipe this one is based on from Bon Appetit. Mint will always be a flavor that I associate with pleasant memories of both of my grandmothers. My strongest association comes from drinking “Plantation Mint” tea with my mom’s mom. Grandmom drank that tea the way other people guzzle coffee. She would make us a pot in her fancy tiered teapot (a gift from her wedding), and we would eat way too many carbs, usually in the form of Pepperidge Farm cinnamon swirl bread or jelly krimpets. She also kept peppermint hard candies in her pockets and on her coffee table at all times. (I wonder where I got my sweet tooth or my love for all things doughy?) As for my dad’s mom, “Mom Mom,” I remember her always having spearmint gumdrops in a glass candy dish in the living room, and her house had the best spearmint-flavored toothpaste. From time to time I will taste some toothpaste that reminds me of it, and I am right back in her bathroom, a 6-year old girl getting ready for bed before sleeping over at her grandparents’ house in New Jersey. Both of them have been gone for years now, and I miss them terribly – so I am thankful for mint and its powers to send me on a trip down memory lane.
These days mint is one of my favorite things to grow in our rooftop garden throughout the summer (partially because it is a wild beast of a plant and hard to kill). My favorite routine on a weekend morning is to slip out the back door to the garden, snip off a bunch of mint leaves, and bring them back inside to brew in a cup with some plain green tea. Sometimes I add a little bit of honey to it. I prefer sweeter mints like mojito mint or spearmint as opposed to peppermint. This year for the garden I chose chocolate mint (how could I not?) and pineapple mint (both pictured above in my illustration, chocolate on the left and pineapple on the right). I may be a little late to this miso train, but I’m jumping on that bandwagon hard-core. As an ingredient I wasn’t really aware of until college, I had been a little skeptical of it, and had only ever heard of it being used in miso soup. Then I started to pay a little more attention, and I got curious. The miso glaze from Love and Lemons was like our gateway drug into The World of Miso. After that encounter, we became a little obsessed: Robert attempted to put that miso glaze on anything he could get his hands on, and I started pinning any recipe that mentioned that magical umami ingredient. Then there was the miso-creamed kale that rocked my world, and the miso-maple roasted roots that took our salad from “great” to “totally boss.” In case you can’t tell, I want to cook with miso some more. A lot more. As usual, Food52 came to the rescue by telling me all about how to cook with miso, and better yet – how to make a week’s worth of dinners with a batch of miso butter. I need to try that. I pin a lot of recipes. I get irrationally sad and frustrated sometimes because I know I could never make all of them. These “Wish List” posts are a way for me to highlight some of the amazing recipes I would like to make, with each one focusing on a specific ingredient or type of food, etc. If you make something from here, please let me know! Some of you may be sick of pumpkin, but Thanksgiving isn’t even over yet, so please excuse me for this.
I used to steer clear of pumpkin things, because all I ever really had it in was pumpkin pie. Well the thing is – I don’t really like pumpkin pie. Surprising, right? I know, I’m weird. Once I started getting really interested in cooking and following food blogs, my eyes were opened. Food bloggers are crazy! They’ll throw pumpkin in anything. I’m convinced that food bloggers look at the year in food seasons instead of traditional seasons. It’s not fall or autumn, people – it’s PUMPKIN SEASON. But I’m totally okay with that. I feel like the food blog world really outdid themselves this year with pumpkin, so I went a little crazy with my pinning as well.
